Billk was born from a simple frustration: every habit app felt like more work than the habits themselves. We built the calm alternative.
Our Story
In 2022, our founder Kenji Matsuda was trying to rebuild his health after burnout. He downloaded seven habit apps. Each one was complex, gamified, and ironically — stressful. He deleted them all and started with a single notebook page instead.
It worked. A handwritten grid on a piece of paper was all it took to track three simple habits consistently for three months. The breakthrough insight was that the friction of complex apps was the problem, not the solution.
"The tracker should be quieter than the habit itself. If your tracking system creates more stress than your habits relieve, something is wrong."
— Kenji Matsuda, Founder of BillkIn 2023, Kenji partnered with behavioral designer Aiko Tanaka and engineer Marcus Webb to turn that paper grid into Billk — a minimal, science-backed system that anyone could use regardless of their tech comfort level or lifestyle.
Today, Billk is used by over 12,000 people across 40 countries. Our team works from a small office in Shibuya, Tokyo, and shares a single guiding principle: calm tools create consistent change.
What We Stand For
Every product decision is filtered through one question: does this make the user calmer or more anxious? Calm wins every time.
Our methods are grounded in peer-reviewed behavioral science. We don't invent trends — we translate research into practice.
If a feature can be removed without loss of value, it gets removed. Simplicity is not laziness — it is the most difficult design discipline.
Habits are personal. We design for imperfect humans, not idealized productivity robots. Missing a day is normal. We help you return.
Our Approach
Tokyo's design culture — clean lines, intentional space, profound respect for craft — is embedded in every Billk template and method. We believe a tracker can be beautiful without being ornamental.
